The Newhall area of Sheffield is to the North East of the city, close to Attercliffe. Today it is near the sporting arena of the Don Valley Stadium, but sport of a different kind was held there in 1855 when a two day Spring race meeting took place on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th April 1855, followed by a two day Summer meeting in July. At the inaugural meeting on the Monday the opening Sheffield Stakes over 1 ¼ miles was won by Mr Jacob’s Victory from Salopia and Ivanhoe. Races continued for the next 3 years until a final meeting on Monday 27th September 1858 when the Sheffield Handicap over 1 ½ miles was won by Peggy Taff, while the concluding Attercliffe Stakes went to Mr Osborne’s Spider. |
